Program Goals and Objectives:
- Provide the registrant with a review of the current literature for the diagnosis and treatment of commonly encountered infectious disorders of the foot and ankle.
- Present currently accepted guidelines for the utilization of oral antibiotics in at risk and special populations including the geriatric, pediatric, CKD, diabetic and immunocompromised patient.
- Familiarize the registrant with current recommendations with reference to the medical management of osteomyelitis.
- Examine the role of oral antibiotic therapy for the management of osteomyelitis.
- Present the guidelines of the Infectious Disease Society of America for the evaluation and treatment of soft tissue infections.
- Review the International Working Group of the Diabetic Foot guidelines for the evaluation and management of infection in patients with diabetes.
- Present and update proper selection and utilization of oral antibiotics for the treatment of commonly encountered infections of the foot and ankle including MRSA.
- Review the current literature examining the role of antibiotics and other preoperative and postoperative interventions utilized to reduce the frequency of perioperative sepsis.
- Present the ARA guidelines further radiographic evaluation of soft tissue and bone infection of the foot and ankle.
- Review ICD 10 and CPT considerations for the treatment of infectious disease presenting in the foot and ankle.
- Familiarize the attending and review indications for and utilization of laboratory studies for the diagnosis of infection, and for the assessment of response to treatment.
